“Let’s Explore . . .” is a flexible project primarily aimed at investigating and presenting a living history of your locality and producing a resource for teaching and learning in the classroom and for the public through local libraries and museums.
The project combines a “hard copy” output such as a large scale digital giclee print (permanent ink on canvas) or a woven tapestry (1m x 2m) and a virtual tour of the area through sound recording and video, illustration and animation.
Projects typically involve school children of any age and community members from young to old. Participants are involved in every aspect of the project from designing the tapestry or print to scripting and recording and editing interviews.
They learn to compose screen images with Adobe Photoshop and create shapes and control tension in weaving. They develop a critical eye through group consultancy sessions to ensure that all is going as intended with the design of a digital print, woven tapestry, interactivity on the CD ROM and more.
The participants take true ownership of their product and take pride in its distribution to the community and its use in the future to help teach and inform through schools, libraries and museums.
Assistance with fund raising can be provided and projects can be shared across a cluster of schools.
Smaller scale projects can also be arranged. These generally focus on one aspect of the above description such as conductiong and recording an interview with an older community member, editing and presenting this for use on CD. Alternatively, photography and digital collage can be used to investigate an historical or environmental aspect of the local area.
