This whole school design and weave project introduced weaving to the school in a way that will allow them to work with the techniques again in the future. Two classes were involved in designing and weaving the large communal tapestry for the school. The other classes all worked on composite wall hangings - work that was made up of individual pieces of weaving on a common theme and then hung together to form a coherent display.

All the children in the school researched different aspects of the theme for the communal tapestry and these themes were also used in the composite pieces made in their classes. The Year 4 and 5 classes that worked on the communal tapestry also made individual tapestries but with the purpose of giving the children the skills they would need to work on the large tapestry. To this end the year 5 children also wove the letters that make up the words "Llanmartin Primary School 2002".

From the school ....

The development of this area has all taken place in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. This is our Jubilee project.

Llanmartin Primary School is built upon marshland in an environment rich with fauna, flora and history. Our name is derived from St Martin's Church.

Underwood Estate and the school were built to support the opening of Llanwern Steelworks, later Corus.
The growth in transportation and communications have led to the construction of the M4 motorway linking South Wales to London and also the Second Severn Crossing.

All these together with the legends attached to our area are illustrated in out tapestry.
