This is a whole school project based on the structure detailed in Option J on the Project Options page. Class 12 and class 6 (yrs. 6 and 3) worked on a communal woven tapestry celebrating the millennium and the schools slogan, "Every Child's a Star". The tapestry was woven on its side and so we all went around with our heads bent sideways ! The design for the tapestry was developed with class 12 and based on the drawing work done by all the children in the school. Classes 12 and 6 also wove their own individual practice tapestries on which they could experiment with different techniques and materials. The work done by the other Junior classes was based on the theme of emotions. In each class there were three groups, each of which was been asked to describe a different emotion through colour and texture. The emotions were divided into positive, negetive and "in between". Each class was asked to pick one emotion from each category and these were then discussed before translating them into colour and texture. To do this, they made individual pieces of weaving on card frames using a wide range of materials. When all the pieces of weaving were finished, a composite piece was created by mounting them on a wire framework. The main coordinating factor is colour but texture is also important. Children in the Infants worked in the same way on the theme of "Weather". The theme was divided into four areas - "A Hot Day", "A Cold Day", "A Wet Day" and "A Wild and Windy Day". Their composite work(s) were also coordinated according to colour and texture. Where time allowed, both infants and juniors were asked to observe their finished weaving carefully and make a drawing of it, trying to depict the textures in the different materials in another medium. They were also asked to list some of the textural words used in our discussions that would help to describe their weaving. |
