Research drawings | Communal Tapestry | Practice tapestries

The Alderman Davies Primary School Design and Weave Project was one that involved the whole school. The intention was to give the pupils and teachers some experience of tapestry weaving and extend their understanding of design.

The lower junior classes (years 3 and 4) worked on a communal woven tapestry that celebrates Neath at the turn of the century. They learnt and practiced the skills they needed to do this by weaving small individual tapestries on which they can also experiment with different techniques and materials.

Other classes in the school had the opportunity to work on small group tapestries. This not only helped them to understand some of the technical aspects of a medium that we all use (and wear) in a variety of ways throughout our lives, but also helped them to appreciate what is required to produce a more complex piece with these techniques such as the communal tapestry that the lower juniors worked on.

The children worked on the communal tapestry in teams of four with the supervision and help of Alastair Duncan as well as the assistance of some parents. Images of the work produced on the project were presented on these pages as the project developed.
